History

Aughnamullen Sarsfields club represents the parish of Aughnamullen East in Mid Monaghan. The area is often referred to as Lough Egish as it was here that the very successful dairy co-op Lough Egish was based. With rationalisation and amalgamations the co-op has now become Lakeland Diaries which thankfully still has a strong processing base in the parish.

Rationalisation and amalgamation on the football front took place much earlier than that on the diary front. In the early decades of the GAA in the area teams were affiliated at various times as Laragh, Tossey, Lough Egish, Carrickatee, Ballytrain, Creeve, Laggan, and Sragh. Folk memory assures us that football was strong and victorious in the parish of Aughnamullen East in the early years of the GAA and it is recorded that in 1891 a local team won a silver cup and championship by defeating Inniskeen. In 1928 the local team affiliated as Lough Egish Sarsfields and the following year 1929 they won the county junior championship.

In 1938 the parish team won the junior championship again but this time under the name of Carrickatee O Connells.

In 1946 the county junior league winners were Lough Egish but when the same cup came back to the parish in 1952 it was won by Laragh. The Laragh team of '53 fell foul of the legislators and were suspended. In 1954 they were to re-appear in the spirit of the liberator as Aughnamullen Sarsfields - the club we know today and indeed the club which now celebrates it's Golden Anniversary.
